CATEC Scholarships and NextGen Skilled Trades Day
This year's funding will be split equally between scholarships at the Charlottesville Area Technical Education Center (CATEC) and the NextGen Skilled Trades Day, helping both current students and those exploring career pathways.
Students · Career PathwaysExpansion of CORE construction training program
The Roanoke-based organization was awarded funding to expand its CORE construction training program, equipping students with industry-recognized credentials. This includes Level 1 trade courses that open pathways in fields like electrical, HVAC and carpentry.
CredentialingEnhancing hands-on learning through construction education zones
This grant provides hands-on learning through the creation of construction education zones, including framing, roofing, and stair-building stations
Supporting the Student Competition Team for the International Builders’ Show
Supports the school’s NAHB student competition team as they prepare to compete at the International Builders’ Show.
Expanding partnerships with the Hampton Roads Workforce Council
Strengthens and expands curriculum and promotes high-demand careers in the trades
Integrating engineering standards into skilled trades education
Providing students with deeper training in code compliance and real-world construction practices
Classroom Microgrant and Apprenticeship Connections Programs
The classroom microgrant program supports construction-related projects and the apprenticeship connections program links students with employers.
Hands-On Construction Programs
Supporting programs in Fairfax County where students build a full-scale home while learning multiple trades.
Supporting students competing in the SkillsUSA state competition
Supporting students at Valley Career & Technical center attending the SkillsUSA state competition through coverage of travel costs. This grant reduces financial barriers to participation.
Workforce Development Scholarhsips and a new Community Trades Day Event
Five scholarships for graduating CATEC students pursuing careers in the building trades, applicable toward technical school, community college, or apprenticeship programs. Funding also supports the inaugural Community Trades Day at Piedmont Virginia Community College — a hands-on career expo for high school students and parents featuring industry demonstrations, exhibits, and career counseling.
Second Annual Build Her Dreams Bed Build, Builders Care Education Microgrant Program, and Core Construction Summer Program
Three workforce programs: the "Build Her Dream Bed Build" engages middle and high school girls in construction through a service project with Sleep in Heavenly Peace, building beds for children in need. The Builders Care Education Microgrant funds special classroom projects and materials. The Core Construction Summer Program offers a three-week intensive for recent graduates and career-changers, resulting in OSHA 10, NCCER, Home Builders Institute, and First Aid/CPR certifications.
110 Students Hosted at Virginia Builders Summit & Honoring the Teacher of the Year at HBAV’s Housing Excellence Awards
More than 110 students attend the annual Virginia Builders Summit free of charge, connecting with 800+ industry professionals, 70+ exhibitors, and a panel discussion on career pathways in residential construction. Funding also supports HBAV's Teacher of the Year Award, recognizing outstanding CTE educators at the Annual Conference & Housing Excellence Awards.
Sponsoring Students from Seven High Schools for SkillsUSA Competition
Seven students from high schools across Staunton, Waynesboro, and Augusta County placed first or second in local and district SkillsUSA competitions in residential construction trades, earning the right to compete at the state level in Roanoke. Grant funding covers travel expenses so cost is never a barrier to participation.
