Housing was a central issue in this year’s presidential and congressional elections. With nearly one million Virginians struggling to afford rent or mortgage payments, candidates from both parties promoted plans to increase housing supply, reduce costs, and cut regulatory barriers.   On election day, the Wall Street Journal touted the National Association of Home Builders priorities featuring NAHB Chief Executive Officer Jim Tobin.

Former president Donald Trump prevailed in the race for the presidency, clinching victories in battleground states of Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and North Carolina. The race for president was closer than expected in Virginia. With 90% of the votes counted, Vice President Harris prevailed with 51.6% of the Virginia vote compared to 46.8% for Trump Trump.

  • Virginians also voted Tuesday for U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. Democratic Sen. Tim was elected to a third term, defeating Hung Cao by a margin 54% to 45%.
  • The Republican party won majority of the U.S. Senate in Tuesday’s election.
  • Virginians also re-elected Republican’s Rob Wittman, Jen Kiggans, Ben Cline, Morgan Griffith and Democratic members Gerry Connolly, Don Beyer Jr., Jennifer McClellan, and Bobby Scott to the U.S. House of Representatives.
  • Newly elected members to U.S. House of Representatives include Eugene Vindman and Suhas Sumbramanyam of the Democratic party and Republican John McGuire.

What’s national saying?

The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) today released an early insight on what the Trump win means for the home building industry: “As the dust settles from this election, NAHB and our Federation stand poised to work with a new Congress and the incoming Trump administration, as well as elected officials at all levels of government, to deliver bipartisan solutions that break the rising cost curve and allow builders to construct more homes and apartments.”

To hear what the election means for housing, NAHB members are invited to register for a post-election webinar on Nov. 13 at 12 p.m. Eastern. Register here (NAHB login required).
